Tribal Rugs
The structure of these hand knotted rugs reflects the nomadic lifestyle. Often woven in wool pile on wool foundation or woven wool flatweaves. They are light and flexible for easy transport. These Rugs are woven without the use of a fixed design and with wool colours unique to each tribal group. The designs are often woven from memory thus the weavers are able to express their own artistic vision for each unique rug. Often the natural colours of animals are used and tribal herds bred to produce these colours. Tribal rug designs are varied but are predominamtly geometric, featuring bold medallions and sometimes additional floral or botanical elements , animals, human figures or other traditional tribal symbols. As a group such rugs may come under the general category of Persian or Oriental but in terms of today's national borders, rugs in this collection may originate from Northern Afghanistan, Iran, Kurdistan and Turkmenistan.
